Liam Payne’s Sister Shares Heartbreaking Tribute After His Tragic Passing

Liam Payne’s sister Nicola Payne is reflecting on her little brother’s tragic death. 

After the One Direction alum fell from the balcony of his hotel room in Argentina, Nicola detailed the moment she learned of the 31-year-old’s death through the media.

“When I saw the news pop up on my phone that you had left us I went cold, I wanted so much for this to be untrue,” the 36-year-old wrote in a statement to Liam on Instagram Oct. 21. “I have spent days hoping that it was a mistake and somebody has got it wrong. You were truly too good for this earth, you are an angel who just lived for making people smile and happy.”

“You have always shown kindness to everyone you met and it shows with just how many people have confirmed what we always knew,” she continued. “We don’t have many pictures together as we never really did that as a family, we never wanted you to feel like you were in a room of fans, but we were your biggest fans always and forever. Your talent alone puts you miles ahead, but also your being you.”

Now, she hopes he’s finally at rest.

“This cruel world is always too quick to judge someone,” Nicola added. “They think it entitles them to be able to speak like they know you. We knew you and we loved you. I hope you have finally found peace up there and you’ll continue to look after us all as you have done in life.”

Nicola also assured the family’s commitment to Liam and Cheryl Cole’s 7-year-old son Bear.

“We will make sure Bear knows about his daddy and how much you loved him,” she concluded. “We promise this.”

Liam was originally vacationing in Argentina with girlfriend Kate Cassidy. Though their trip was originally scheduled for five days, they stayed for two weeks until Kate flew home to Florida Oct. 12. 

At the time of his fall, he appeared to have been alone, according to a press release from the Argentina National Prosecutor’s Office and had been “going through some kind of breakdown as a result of substance abuse.”

Investigators believe that “due to the position in which the body was left,” the singer, per the release, “did not adopt a reflexive posture to protect himself and that he could have fallen in a state of semi or total unconsciousness.”

While a toxicology report is pending, authorities shared in the release that  they found “substances inside [Liam’s] room that at a first glance—and pending confirmation from the experts—would be narcotics and alcoholic beverages.”

An autopsy report shared by officials found Liam’s cause of death to be “polytraumatism (multiple traumatic injuries), internal and external hemorrhage,” noting he had 25 injuries that were consistent with a fall from that height.

“The head injuries were sufficient to cause death,” authorities noted in the autopsy, “while the internal and external hemorrhages in the skull, thorax, abdomen and limbs contributed to the mechanism of death.”

Following his death, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik and friends from around the world have spoken out to pay tribute, including his sister Ruth Gibbons.

“Liam is my best friend,” she wrote on Instagram Oct. 19. “No one could ever make me laugh as much as him, doing his impressions always had me creasing and he loved seeing how much of a laugh he could get.”

“Liam was born with music in his veins,” she continued. “It was clear from a very young age he just had that quality that would make him a star. I could sit and listen to him sing all day, which is a good job really because he never bloody stopped! I will never tire of the look he gives when showing new songs, ‘listen loud,’ he’d say and just grin with pride of his work.” 

Amid her brother’s passing, she’s been riddled with guilt.

“I’m sorry I couldn’t save you,” she wrote. “One last time I need you to know, I’m here if you need anything, I’d drive to the end of the universe to bring you back.”

“We’re completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing,” the band wrote in a joint statement on Instagram. “In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say. But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly.”

Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Harry Styles continued to emphasize the impact Liam had on their lives. 

“The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever,” the statement added. “For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and the fans who loved him alongside us. We will miss him terribly. We love you Liam.”

“I am absolutely devastated about the passing of my amazing friend, Liam,” Niall wrote in a lengthy Instagram statement. “It just doesn’t feel real. Liam had an energy for life and a passion for work that was infectious. He was the brightest in every room and always made everyone feel happy and secure.”

The “Slow Hands” singer continued to reminisce on his time singing alongside Liam in One Direction. 

“All the laughs we had over the years, sometimes about the simplest of things, keep coming to my mind through the sadness,” Niall added. “We got to live out our wildest dreams together and I will cherish every moment we had forever. The bond and friendship we had doesn’t happen often in a lifetime.”

Niall, who had Liam and his girlfriend Kate Cassidy as guests at his recent concert in Buenos Aires, also detailed what it was like seeing his friend for the final time. 

“I feel so fortunate that I got to see him recently,” Niall wrote. “I sadly didn’t know that after saying goodbye and hugging him that evening, I would be saying goodbye forever. It’s heartbreaking. My love and condolences go out to Geoff, Karen, Ruth, Nicola and of course his son Bear. Thank you for everything, Payno. Love you brother.”

“I am truly devastated by Liam’s passing,” Harry began in his Instagram post. “His greatest joy was making other people happy, and it was an honour to be alongside him as he did it.”

“Liam lived wide open, with his heart on his sleeve, he had an energy for life that was infectious,” he added of his legacy. “He was warm, supportive, and incredibly loving. The years we spent together will forever remain among the most cherished years of my life. I will miss him always, my lovely friend.”

Liam’s former One Direction bandmate reflected on all he wished he could have said to him. 

“I can’t help but think selfishly that there was so many more conversations for us to have in our lives,” Zayn wrote on Instagram. “I never got to thank you for supporting me through some of the most difficult times in my life. When I was missing home as a 17 yr old kid you would always be there with a positive outlook and reassuring smile and let me know you were my friend and that I was loved.”

“Even though you were younger than me you were always more sensible than me, you were headstrong, opinionated, and gave no f–ks about telling people when they were wrong,” he continued. “Even though we butted heads because of this a few times,I always secretly respected you for it.”

Zayn also called Liam “the most qualified” musician in the band “in every sense.”

“I lost a brother when you left us and can’t explain to you what I’d give to just give you a hug one last time and say goodbye to you properly and tell you that I loved and respected you dearly,” he wrote. “[I] will cherish all the memories I have with you in my heart forever, there is no words that justify or explain how I feel right now other than beyond devastated.”

Louis shared a lengthy statement to his own Instagram, commemorating Liam’s legacy and his friendship. 

“I am beyond devastated to be writing this but yesterday I lost a brother,” Louis wrote. “Liam was somebody I looked up to everyday, such a positive, funny, and kind soul. I first met Liam when he was 16 and I was 18, I was instantly amazed by his voice but more importantly as time went on I got the chance to see the kind of brother I’d longed all my life for.”

The “Back To You” singer—who cowrote many One Direction songs with Liam—continued to note Liam’s impact on the band. 

“Liam was an incredible song writer with a great sense of melody, we often spoke of getting back into the studio together to try and recreate the writing chemistry we had built up in the band,” he added. “And for the record, Liam was in my opinion the most vital part of One Direction. His experience from a young age, his perfect pitch, his stage presence, his gift for writing. The list goes on. Thank you for shaping us Liam.”

“We are heartbroken,” Liam’s family—including mom Karen, dad Geoff and sisters Ruth and Nicola—told the BBC. “Liam will forever live in our hearts and we’ll remember him for his kind, funny and brave soul. Liam’s girlfriend—who was vacationing with the late singer and left Argentina days before his death—said she has been “at a complete loss” since news of his passing.

“Nothing about the past few days have felt real,” Kate wrote on Instagram Story. “I ask and pray that you give me the grace and space to navigate this in private.”

Calling Liam an “angel,” the influencer added, “I want you to know I loved you unconditionally and completely. I will continue to love you for the rest of my life.”

In a statement describing her ex’s death as an “earth shattering event,” Cheryl—who shares son Bear with Liam—reminded folks to exercise grace during this “indescribably painful time.”

“I’d like to kindly remind everyone that we have lost a human being,” she wrote on Instagram Oct. 18. “Liam was not only a pop star and celebrity, he was a son, a brother, an uncle, a dear friend and a father to our 7 year old son. A son that now has to face the reality of never seeing his father again.”
