Many Are Up In 2024 Box-Office Breakdown

The final figures for the U.S. box-office is in with $8.65 billion in total of domestic gross – down by $270 million from 2023’s $8.92 billion – the strong performances of “Wicked” and “Moana 2” helping end the year on very robust numbers.

According to box-office expert Luiz Fernando, Disney came out on top as distributor with a domestic haul of $1.88 billion – up 30% on 2023. That was helped heavily by the trio of “Inside Out 2” ($653M), “Deadpool & Wolverine” ($637M), and “Moana 2” ($409M).

In second was Universal Pictures with $1.74 billion – a drop of 4% on last year. It was buoyed by successes like “Wicked” ($433M), “Despicable Me 4” ($361M), “Twisters” ($268M), “Kung Fu Panda 4” ($194M) and “The Wild Robot” ($143M).

Third was Warner Bros. Pictures with $1.16 billion – a drop of 18%. Its biggest hits came with “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” ($294M), “Dune: Part Two” ($282M), and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” ($196M).

Fourth was Sony Pictures with $954.5 million, down just 1.6%. It had “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” ($194M), “”It Ends with Us” ($149M), “Venom: The Last Dance” ($140M), and “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” ($113M).

Fifth was Paramount with $914.3 million, up by 8.5% on last year. Its biggest successes were “Gladiator II” ($165M), “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” ($152M), “A Quiet Place: Day One” ($139M), and “IF” ($111M).

It’s a big drop off to the next ones with Disney owned 20th Century Studios in sixth with $311.9 million – down 24%. Most of its revenue came from two hits – “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” ($171M) and “Alien: Romulus” ($105M)

Amongst notable shifts – Lionsgate was down 57% due to a number of bombs, and Angel Studios fell 71% without a “Sound of Freedom” style hit. Almost every speciality producer however was up –

thanks to several releases,,

Bleecker Street by 14%, A24 by 47%, Focus by 53%, Crunchyroll by 55%, FathomEvents by 140%, Searchlight by 172%, Amazon MGM Studios by 222%, IFC Films by 229%, NEON by 478% and MUBI by 1066%.

New Year’s Day reportedly did 33% more business than the first day of 2024 and up 38% over New Year’s Eve’s business. “Mufasa: The Lion King” topped “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” with $10.3 million to $8.95 million.
