Martin St-Louis: the best coach of Cole Caufield’s career

When Martin St-Louis arrived in Montreal in 2022, it was said that he had the tools to launch the career of Cole Caufield. In his first full season as a pro, he was unable to score.

St-Louis was able to get him going.

By the end of the 2021-2022 season, Caufield was scoring at an impressive rate and we were able to see St-Louis’ teachings in the performances of the one who wore the #22 at the time.

Since then, Caufield has become more complete. He is still an excellent scorer (the 40-goal mark is within his reach this season), but he now plays on 200 feet.

In short, St-Louis was at the heart of Cole Caufield’s transformation.

It’s also interesting to note that yesterday, Kent Hughes was on Frank Seravalli’s podcast and said that St-Louis had helped Caufield recover pucks on the backhand.

This is another aspect that has helped.

Hughes on Frankly Speaking with Frank Seravalli says part of Cole Caufield’s success this season is the work he has done with Marty St. Louis, receiving passes on the backhand, retrieving pucks on rim arounds, corralling passes that are not “perfect” passes has played a big role.

“…it used to kind of roll off the blade a little bit and I think he blocks it and holds it way better now and defensively, I know that’s kind of generic but it’s truthful because it makes a big difference when he can play in all situations”
