On April 7, 2025, rumors surfaced on social media suggesting that Microsoft would cease its operations in China starting April 8, 2025, due to geopolitical and international business environment changes. These rumors were based on an alleged internal email from Shanghai Wicresoft, a joint venture between Microsoft and Chinese partners.
An internal employee from Wicresoft clarified to Sina Technology that the affected operations primarily involve outsourced departments related to Office services. The employee mentioned that leadership was notified on April 3, work ceased on April 4, and by April 7, the entire project team, consisting of approximately 400 to 500 individuals, was awaiting further discussions regarding severance packages, reportedly following an “n+1” compensation structure.
Public records indicate that Wicresoft was established in 2002 as Microsoft’s first joint venture in China, providing digital services across various sectors, including high-tech, internet, finance, insurance, manufacturing, automotive, energy, and public utilities. The company operates multiple delivery centers globally.
As of the time of reporting, Microsoft has not issued an official response regarding these rumors. A representative from Wicresoft’s official service hotline stated, “We have not received any information, nor do we have the authority to release any statements. Please refer to official announcements for accurate information.”
This situation highlights the complexities and sensitivities of multinational operations amid evolving geopolitical landscapes.
