Mysterious disease claims lives of 5 students at Kebbi University

By HARUNA AHMED, Birnin-Kebbi –

A mysterious disease has struck Kebbi State University of Science and Technology, Aliero (KSUSTA), claiming the lives of five students.

The cause of the disease remains unknown, sparking concerns among students and university officials.

According to sources, four students died last week, while another student passed away on Sunday after falling ill overnight.

The university’s registrar, Maimaru Alhaji Tilli, confirmed the deaths of four students, citing university records.

“Yes, four students have died according to our records, but we do not yet know the cause. The Ministry of Health has cautioned us, and they have advised that there is a need to decongest students’ accommodation,” he stated.

Tilli added that he had officially written to the Commissioner for Higher Education, Isah Abubakar Tunga, seeking guidance on measures to curb the fatalities.

Although officials from the World Health Organization (WHO) visited the university last week for an awareness campaign on meningitis, they did not confirm whether the disease was responsible for the student deaths.

The Ministry of Health has advised the university to decongest students’ accommodation, and an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the mysterious disease.
