Norris Defeats Piastri, Leclerc To Win Austrian Grand Prix

McLaren driver Lando Norris recorded a hard-fought victory to beat his teammate Oscar Piastri to win the 2025 Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday.

The McLaren drivers dominated the race with Norris, and Piastri finishing in the top two as they both went wheel to wheel before Norris emerged victorious with an impressive performance.

Reigning champion Max Verstappen had an unforgettable outing as his race came to an end on the opening lap due to a collision with Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli.

Verstappen is now 61 points off the pace approaching the season’s halfway mark after his race on Red Bull’s home track lasted a mere three corners.

Norris topped the race while Oscar Piastri followed him closely with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc taking the third spot, Lewis Hamilton finished fourth.

George Russell of Mercedes ended in fifth, Liam Lawson of Racing Bulls came sixth, Fernando Alonso, Gabriel Bortoleto, Nico Hulkenberg, and Esteban Ocon completed the top 10 respectively.

Norris recorded his third win of the season to cut Piastri’s lead to 15 points ahead of the British Grand Prix next weekend.

He admitted that Piastri gave him a tough time on the grid while looking forward to the next Grand Prix in Britain.

Norris said: “We had a great battle, that’s for sure! It was a lot of fun. For me, a lot of stress but a lot of fun. A nice battle, so well done to Oscar.

“Hopefully it was a nice one for everyone to watch, but inside the car it was tough, especially when he was in DRS.

“The DRS is so big around here, so it was hard to get him out of the gap.

“Once I did, I could manage things pretty well but he was still quick,”

Oscar Piastri described the race as intense while praising Norris for fighting hard to secure victory.

He said: “Intense, I hope it was good watching because it was pretty hard work from the car so I tried my absolute best but could have done a better job when I just got ahead momentarily but it was a good battle, bit on the edge at times.

“Probably pushed the limit a bit far but it was a good race and that’s what we were here to do, race each other and try and fight for wins. That’s what we did today, it was close for me but not quite enough.

“Thanks to the team. To have the kind of pace we did whilst battling each other, it was very impressive. I can’t thank the team enough for the car we’ve got.”

Max Verstappen has opened up on what transpired during his collision with Antonelli which led to his ouster from the race.

He said: “Unlucky, I guess. It is what it is. I spoke quickly to Kimi, he came with me to the hospitality.

“I think every driver has made a mistake like that. No one does that on purpose as well so for me, that’s not a big deal.

“It was not the weekend that I guess we hoped for pace wise. Then of course we were a little bit unlucky in Qualifying with that yellow flag, otherwise you start a bit further ahead.

“Then the race was unlucky again. Sometimes you have those weekends.”

Up next is the British Grand Prix which kicks off on July 7 at the Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire, England.
