Ghanaian legal practitioner, Maurice Ampaw, has revealed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was scared of facing John Dramani Mahama in the 2024 elections.
Ampaw, speaking on his Wontumi TV show, revealed that prior to the NDC primaries in 2023, the NPP attempted to sabotage his attempt to be elected the flagbearer of the NDC for the third consecutive term.
The NPP calculated that as a former President, Mahama would be a formidable candidate and therefore attempted to ensure he would not win the NDC flagbearership race.
Ampaw said the NPP commenced a public relations strategy to downplay Mahama’s strengths as a candidate and hype up his opponents, particularly the former Bank of Ghana Governor and Finance Minister, Dr Kwabena Duffuor.
Eventually, Mahama won the NDC flagbearer race at a cakewalk, receiving almost 99% of the vote in the May 2023 ballot with no meaningful opposition.
As the NPP feared, Mahama went ahead to win the 2024 elections, routing the former Vice President and NPP Presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
