Public Mobile raises plan prices to match Freedom Mobile

Public Mobile changed its plans, increasing prices and data buckets across its 5G options.

The Telus-owned wireless provider seems to be closely matching Freedom’s new plans. Below is a list of Public Mobile’s plans with new and changed options highlighted:

$34/10GB 5G Canada/U.S./Mexico (previously $29/10GB).
$39/60GB 5G Canada/U.S./Mexico (previously $35/50GB).
$49/80GB 5G Canada/U.S./Mexico (previously $45/75GB).
$59/100GB 5G Canada/U.S./Mexico (previously $55/100GB).
$32/20GB 4G (unchanged).
$27/6GB 4G (previously $27/10GB).
$23/1GB 4G (new).
$19/500MB 4G (unchanged).

All the above plans include unlimited Canada-wide calling and texting and other standard features like call display.

It’s no surprise to see Public change plans. The provider put warning labels on its previous offers that they would end on January 30th. Moreover, the provider has been keeping pace with Freedom’s plans for some time, so with Freedom recently raising prices, it makes sense that Public would follow suit.

However, unlike Freedom, Public doesn’t offer home internet services or a related bundle to reduce the price.

It’s also surprising to see Public change some 4G plans just days after raising prices on those plans. The second round of changes make the 4G plans even worse. For example, the $27/10GB plan was reduced to 6GB. However, earlier this week, that plan was $23/6GB, so not only does it cost more now, but customers aren’t getting any extra data. Then, Public added a $23/1GB plan — the $19/500MB plan used to include 1GB of data.

As much as these increased prices suck, Public Mobile’s plans are still some of the better options out there, beating out the $45/60GB 4G plans offered by Fido, Koodo and Virgin Plus.
