The House of Representatives Committee on the South East Development Commission has pledged to conduct thorough oversight of the N250 billion allocated to the commission to ensure transparency and accountability in the utilisation of the funds.
The Chairman of the Committee, Chris Nkwonta, made this commitment on Monday, in Abuja.
Recall that last week, the committee approved N250 billion as the take-off grant for the SEDC during its budget defence at the National Assembly Complex.
Nkwonta, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, dismissed concerns that the funds might be diverted, assuring that they would be used strictly to address the infrastructural needs of the Southeast region.
“Our committee, like that of the Senate, wields equal oversight authority to thoroughly scrutinize and guide the agency’s activities, ensuring they align with the region’s best interests,” Nkwonta stated.
He further assured that the committee would ensure that the agency’s programs and projects are implemented effectively and efficiently.
Highlighting the importance of collaboration, he added that the committee would work closely with regional stakeholders, including state governments, traditional leaders, and community groups, to tackle the challenges facing the region.
Nkwonta also reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of the South East by ensuring the funds are properly utilised.
He urged the people of the region to prepare for a new era of commitment from the Federal Government, aimed at delivering long-awaited development.
