Retired DSP Allegedly Commits Suicide After Killing Three Over Land Dispute

A 63-year-old retired Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Charles Atideka, has allegedly taken his own life two days after reportedly murdering three people, including two of his relatives, in a land dispute in Yovoyan, Gberefu Sea Beach, Badagry, Lagos.

According to police reports, Atideka shot and killed Richard Atideka (75), Latevi Atideka (70), and Muji Onilude (63) in the early hours of Tuesday. The victims were scheduled to testify against him in a land-related case. After the attack, he reportedly fled the community through the beach.

Confirming the incident, Lagos Police spokesman CSP Benjamin Hundeyin stated that a manhunt was launched, but Atideka later resurfaced and was found to have ingested poison. He was rushed to Badagry General Hospital, where he died on Thursday.

However, Atideka’s son, Henry, has disputed the police’s version of events, insisting his father did not commit suicide. Henry claimed that Atideka was on his way to the police station to honor an invitation when he collapsed and was taken to the hospital. He further alleged that his father disappeared from the hospital’s ICU while under police guard, only for the family to be later informed of his death.

“My father was a respected member of the Badagry community. He didn’t kill anyone. The police should find the real culprit so that his soul can rest in peace,” Henry said, calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his father’s death
