Momma, this ain’t your grandparent’s Nashville, TN, no more — and Red Bull Jukebox live from the “Music City” was proof of that.
Red Bull commemorated the United States debut of the Jukebox experience on Wednesday (Oct. 2). Cowboys, cowgirls, and country music connoisseurs descended upon the Ascend Amphitheater as a blend of modern and classic twang spread throughout the Southern stars.
Unlike usual concerts, Red Bull’s Jukebox series allows fans to select the artist’s setlists via online voting ahead of the show and real-time voting using color-coordinated bracelets during the festivities. As a result, fans were treated to unique performances from some of the country’s brightest stars — past but mostly present. Stars such as Shaboozey, BRELAND, Priscilla Block, The Castellows, Tucker Wetmore, Muscadine Bloodline, and the Brothers Osbourne. But, with the unique voting mechanics, the show took various left turns for the better, of course. Special guests such as Armani White, Mickey Guyton, Nashville’s Fisk Jubilee choir, and even the Tennessee State University’s Grammy award-winning marching band, the Aristocrat of Bands, hit the stage for reimagined versions of hit country songs.
The show was an indication of where country music is headed in the years to come, with the crowd transforming into a honky tonk off Broadway as Shaboozey unleashed his historic No. 1 hit single, “A Bar Song (Tipsy).” But worry not, that “classic country” feel was still alive and the foundation of Red Bull’s inaugural Jukebox event.
In fact, BRELAND spoke to VIBE about country music’s evolution and surge in popularity over the past two years ahead of the event, citing the genre’s “depth” as a catalyst.
“I think we reached a point in Hip Hop and Pop music, where after a decade of chart dominance, audiences started craving more depth in their lyrics and stories,” the New Jersey native told VIBE. “Country music is the genre of storytelling, and as the landscape of artists creating it has become more diverse, a wider audience is able to connect with it, a new but familiar version of country.”
