Song To Write “My Best Friend’s Wedding 2”

Sony Pictures
Following the critical success of her romance dramas “Past Lives” and “Materialists,” filmmaker Celine Song has been set to pen a sequel to the 1997 rom-com classic “My Best Friend’s Wedding” at Sony Pictures.

Collider broke the news, which has been subsequently confirmed by the trades. The project is still in early development at this stage, with Song only attached to write, not direct.

In fact, it’s so early it may not necessarily be her next project. The news follows years of rumours about a potential sequel going forward, along with a failed attempt to develop an ABC TV series sequel back in 2015.

The original starred Julia Roberts and Dermot Mulroney as Julianne and Michael, a pair of best friends who made a pact that if they were still single at age 28, they would get married.

When Mulroney’s character becomes engaged to another woman (Cameron Diaz), Roberts had just four days to stop the wedding. The P.J. Hogan-directed film was a box-office smash, earning $127 million domestically, and was well-received. Rupert Everett’s supporting performance in particular was universally praised.
