Image: Push SquareHardware sneak Moore’s Law Is Dead has kickstarted a fresh chain of rumours about PS6’s purported portable incarnation.

On a recent YouTube video, he shared an anonymous email from a dev about PS5’s recently added low power mode. According to them, Sony is eager for more devs to take advantage of it, and provided documentation and tips on how to do so.

Analysis of some of the game’s already using the feature – like Demon’s Souls – shows that it’s possible to maintain 60fps with the feature enabled, and the priority for power reduction appears to revolve around lower resolutions. That’s apparently aligns with the platform holder’s goal for the mode as well.

Many think this could all be a Trojan horse for the rumoured PS6 handheld, which is increasingly establishing itself as one of the industry’s worst kept secrets.

But even with the power saver feature enabled, many of the games supporting it still push 100W, which is a far cry from the kind of figures a hypothetical PS6 portable would need to hit. Of course, a better optimised chip set could help bring that figure down.

To be honest, it’s impossible to say whether Sony is trying to push its low power mode on developers because of its touted handheld or because of its ecological ambitions. In this particular example, we’re not sure there’s much evidence either way.
