Sony has announced increased holdings in Kadokawa Corporation, the parent company of FromSoftware. Sony spent about 50 billion yen (about $457 million CAD) on company shares to bring its total ownership up to 10 percent, becoming its largest shareholder.

The ‘collaboration,’ as Sony calls it in the press release, should maximize both companies’ IP value globally. Examples include turning Kadokawa’s IPs into live-action films and TV globally, producing anime, and expanding the reach of Kadokawa’s current anime and games. Games and anime under Kadokawa include Danganronpa and the 2023 game of the year, Elden Ring. So this means we might see an Elden Ring or Bloodborne live-action TV series or movie.

The press release doesn’t mention Sony’s intention with FromSoftware games and whether they’ll continue to be on both Xbox and PlayStation consoles, or if they will follow in the path of Bloodborne, which was only on PlayStation.
