The Cherry Orchard @ Shanghai Culture Square
The Cherry Orchard is a timeless masterpiece by Russian playwright Anton Chekhov. First performed at the Moscow Art Theater in 1904, it has earned its place as one of the theater’s most treasured works.
This French adaptation of The Cherry Orchard premiered in 2021, opening the 75th Avignon Theater Festival. Directed by Tiago Rodrigues, this production stars the internationally acclaimed French actress Isabelle Huppert in the lead role, Lyubov.
Huppert’s performance masterfully captures both the comedic and tragic dimensions of her character, adding depth and allure to the role. Tiago Rodrigues, both the director of the play and the current director of the Avignon Theater Festival, presents a fresh perspective on Chekhov’s classic.
The play explores the themes of “change of ownership and the disappearance of the cherry orchard,” reflecting the societal shifts of late 19th and early 20th century Russia. Through elegant storytelling, it examines the rise of capitalism and the decline of the aristocracy.
