This generation’s been a weird one

Alright, so the big rumour about the new Xbox console is that it’s apparently targeting a 2027 release as things stand, and although things could definitely change over the next couple of years, it’s nice to have a date in mind at least.
If the next Xbox console is to release in 2027, that’ll make it seven years since the launch of the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S in 2020 – same as the seven years between the Xbox One and and Xbox Series X|S launches (2013-2020), and similar to the eight years between the Xbox 360 and Xbox One (2005-2013).
However, in my opinion at least, it feels like a different situation this time around. The COVID pandemic really slowed the Xbox Series X and S generation down in the early days, with players struggling to get their hands on the consoles (a similar situation with the PS5), and developers being forced to work from home and inevitably delay their games.
And of course, last year we saw the release of the PlayStation 5 Pro, which is clearly the best version of the console to date, but it’s also the most expensive – and not necessarily providing the kind of gains that most players want.
Is Microsoft really going to drop a meaningful new console that can move the needle in just two years’ time? Perhaps, if it’s set to be something totally different – like a box that supports Steam and other third-party launchers in addition to just Xbox console games. Otherwise though, it’s hard to say where the major advancements are coming from.
There’s obviously a lot of speculation about how Xbox’s next console will utilise AI and the cloud in innovative ways, but again, it remains to be seen whether any of that can attract the masses – especially when 2027 is just around the corner.
So, what do you think? Is it too early to release a new console in 2027? Tell us in the poll and comments below!
