Tamil Nadu rain update: IMD predicts heavy rainfalls between Dec 16-19

In a recent weather update, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry between December 16 and 19 due to the Northeast monsoon. But the heaviest rains are expected between December 17 and 18. The officials have warned fishermen to stay away from the sea on December 16 and 17.

In its official release, IMD mentioned, “Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall expected on 17th and 18th December, with isolated heavy rainfall likely between 16th-19th December.”

Warning for December 16

IMD has forecast some major downpours across Tamil Nadu and the Karaikal region. Heavy rains are expected in Tiruvarur, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Ramanathapuram, and Mayiladuthurai districts.

On December 17, the rainfall is set to intensity and is likely to hit Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Cuddalore, Tiruchirappalli, Mayiladuthurai, Ariyalur, Nagapattinam, Villuppuram, Perambalur, Pudukkottai, and Chengalpattu districts. In addition, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema will also be affected.

Prediction for December 18 and 19

For December 18 and 19, the weather is predicted to stay severe in Cuddalore and Villuppuram along with Puducherry and some places in Kerala as well.

Effects of heavy rain

Expect flooding and waterlogging in low-lying regions while underpasses will be closed in urban regions. Reduced visibility from the downpours could disrupt travel and lead to traffic congestion in major cities. Vulnerable structures may face damage, with an increased risk of localized landslides and mudslides in certain areas. These conditions highlight the severity of the weather and the need for preparedness in affected regions.

As the Northeast monsoon brings heavy rains, residents and authorities in Tamil Nadu and surrounding areas are urged to stay alert and take necessary precautions. The IMD’s detailed forecast emphasizes the importance of preparedness to manage potential impacts like flooding and traffic disruptions while protecting lives and property.

Earlier this month, IMD had predicted heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu. It was so severe that officials had advised tourists planning to visit popular hill stations like Kodaikanal and Coonoor to postpone their trips for the next three days, as these areas are expected to receive heavy rainfall due to the depression moving toward the Arabian Sea.
