In an interview given to Aanmeegaglitz channel, astrologer Monica Rajkamal spoke in detail about the significance of the Thaipusam festival.
Significance of Thaipusam:
Thaipusam is celebrated on the Poosam star day in the Tamil month of Thai. It is considered a very special day for Lord Muruga. Thaipusam marks the day Lord Muruga received the Vel (divine spear) from his mother, Parvati. It is considered highly auspicious to visit and worship Shiva, Parvati, and Muruga on this day.
Fasting Methods:
Fasting is a common practice on Thaipusam. Devotees are expected to consume Sattvic food (pure, wholesome food). Non-vegetarian food should be avoided. Those in good health can observe a fast by consuming only milk and fruits. Those unable to fast for 48 or 21 days can observe a one-day fast on Thaipusam.
The History of Kavadi:
The practice of carrying the Kavadi is based on the history of Idumban, the disciple of sage Agastya, who carried the Sivagiri and Shaktigiri hills as a Kavadi.
Special Abhishekam (Sacred Bathing):
The milk Abhishekam at Palani Murugan Temple is very special. It is believed that when milk is poured on the Navapashana idol (made with nine poisonous substances), the milk transforms into a medicine that cures diseases.
Where to Worship:
Special Abhishekams and prayers are conducted at all Murugan temples on Thaipusam. Devotees can worship at their local Murugan temples. There is no compulsion to visit the six main abodes (Arupadai Veedu) of Muruga.
Mantras:
The mantra “Om Saravana Bhava” can be chanted 108 times. Devotees can also recite the Kanda Shasti Kavasam and Thevaram hymns.
Offerings:
Thinai maavu (foxtail millet flour) mixed with honey and sweet pongal (rice pudding) are favorite offerings to Lord Muruga.
Method of Lighting Lamps:
At home, place raw rice on a banana leaf, and then place an earthen lamp filled with sesame oil or ghee on top. Light two cotton wicks together. In temples, betel leaf lamps can be lit. Six earthen lamps can be placed on six betel leaves and offered to Muruga.
Benefits of Fasting:
It is believed that observing a proper fast can remove obstacles to marriage, bless childless couples with children, and resolve job-related problems. During the fasting period, one should abstain from non-vegetarian food, avoid anger, and refrain from hurting others’ feelings.
