The mystery of skyquakes: A global phenomenon for curious travellers

For centuries, skyquakes, a mysterious phenomenon, have been baffling experts across the globe. These are usually loud, unexplained noises, often sounding like sonic booms, thunder, or explosions, which have been recorded in various places, including Japan, India, and several US cities.

Despite their frequency, no one has been able to decipher yet the reason behind this, and what causes these mysterious events.

Skyquakes have been called by different names in various parts of the world. While in New York, near Seneca Lake, they are known as ‘Seneca guns,’ in Belgium, they are referred to as ‘mistpoeffers.’ In Japan, it’s called ‘uminari,’ which translates to ‘cries from the sea.’ Whatever the name, the unique interpretations of the mysterious noises in different regions, add a level of mystery surrounding the phenomenon.

While travelling to the abovementioned places, be careful and keep a watch if you also get to encounter these so-called skyquakes.

The said phenomenon was first recorded in 1811 in New Madrid, Missouri, when locals reported hearing weird sounds during a 7.2-magnitude earthquake. Since then, reports of such strange sounds across the globe have been reported, such as from the Adriatic Sea to Franklinville, New York, and Charleston, South Carolina. The said phenomenon even caught the attention of famed author James Fenimore Cooper, who mentioned it in his short story ‘The Lake Gun.’

Despite numerous theories, the exact cause of skyquakes remains elusive. Some researchers have suggested meteoric impacts, changes in air pressure, seismic activity, or even gas escaping from lakes. Others believe military drills or airplanes may be responsible. However, none of these theories offer a definitive explanation, leaving the skyquake mystery unsolved.

While the exact cause of skyquakes remains elusive, their effects are clear. They often create confusion and fear among those who experience them. However, unlike earthquakes, which involve the ground shaking and can lead to destruction, skyquakes primarily leave a lasting impression of wonder and mystery, making them one of nature’s strangest unsolved phenomena.
