From the moment I decided to put away my usual strappy sandals and peep-toed wedges, I’ve realized there’s are no prettier spring footwear than thong sandals.
These signature shoes from the ’90s and ’00s have a lot to offer a spring capsule wardrobe. Despite their minimalist Y-shaped design most often associated with casual flip-flops, they’re the ideal style for looking elegant and well-dressed with pants and skirts, the two fail-safe pieces that I reach for when a heat wave hits the city.
After a quick search through Spring-Summer 2025 fashion guides, I noticed that thong sandals have gone from predictable basics to the statement pieces every fashion lover will want in their collection (myself included). From Alaïa’s wedge-heeled silhouettes to Bottega Veneta’s femme fatale styles with extra-delicate straps, to Chloé’s plastic silhouettes, a variety of innovative options confirm that these open-toe shoes are anything but boring!
While there’s nothing better than feeling special in a pair you don’t see twice in a day, it’s not about betting on thongs you might not wear much. It’s best to go for options that are modern yet versatile enough to wear with everything and on any occasion. Luckily, I found the answer in street style photos and on the runways as fashion experts have already decided which styles are worth incorporating as soon as possible. Take note! If there’s one thing I learned about Spring-Summer 2025 sandal trends, it’s that the open Y-shaped kitten heel is the choice of the moment that you shouldn’t pass up! Its minimalist design goes with everything and is versatile enough to wear over several years.
Plus, I love that they are a bit more comfortable as opposed to platforms or horizontal strap models. A pinstripe suit with flowy pants paired with a basic tee makes for a look that’s distinctive and cool in any context, from a day at the office to an afternoon meeting.

For a long time, I thought thong sandals were the same old same old, until street style and runways showed them in an improved, avant-garde version that’s worthy of being included in my collection. The pieces with thick straps and flat soles are perfect for adorning my feet in a unique way without becoming overly conceptual; in other words, they’re minimalist but with an original touch that doesn’t end up boring.
This is something I’ve seen in the silhouettes of luxury brands like Ferragamo and Alaïa or affordable brands like Zara and Massimo Dutti. I imagine them in a black and white outfit consisting of high-waisted white pants, a thin belt, and a T-shirt—perfect for a casual date with friends in the city.

I love black thong sandals because they guarantee absolute versatility. However, Spring-Summer 2025 is the perfect excuse to break away from the traditional and finally dare to try footwear in solid or pastel tones that are trending this season. This street style photo inspires me to try to those brown options found at luxury brands like Gianvito Rossi, Toteme, or Gia Borghini. They can be classic, with boho beading, and even wedge heels, depending on the look and the occasion. A linen set creates an attractive outfit that makes me feel fresh in the city.

When a heat wave knocks on my door, I can’t think about boots or pumps, especially when I have to go to the office. Y-strap sandals have become my best ally for looking well-dressed without feeling suffocated by the wrong shoes.
There are now countless styles worth considering, including triple-strap silhouettes that add an extra boost to any look. I don’t need to think too hard to style them appropriately; just mix them into a pure white sartorial ensemble with straight-legged ’90s pants, as seen in the photo above.

Finally, I thought I’d seen it all when it came to summer footwear until I saw Ferragamo’s thong ballerina-style sandals, a pair that (in my opinion) surpasses all the previous options. They’re seductive, modern, and provide just the right amount of height, ideal for women who love flirty styles. I imagine them with ruffled miniskirts, or in a monochromatic outfit with an asymmetrical midi skirt and matching jacket.
