Threads is working on a community groups featured called ‘Loops.’
As shared on the platform by veteran technologist Chris Messina and spotted by TechCrunch, new strings in the app’s latest update refer to the ability to join and leave ‘Loop’ communities. There are also fields pointing to details like a community name and bio.
TechCrunch notes that an Instagram spokesperson confirmed the existence of Loops but noted it was only in early development and not currently being tested. Therefore, it remains to be seen if and when the feature ultimately sees the light of day.
Should it come out, it’s also unclear how Loops will work, given that Threads doesn’t use hashtags in the traditional way that other platforms like X and Instagram. Instead, Threads only allows you to use a hashtag to tag a single topic or phrase to a post, like “Canadian Threads” or “Tech Threads.”
X, for its part, has been bullish on its Communities feature for driving engagement, while Meta’s own Instagram and Facebook feature private channels and groups, specifically. It remains to be seen how a similar community-driven feature might play out on Threads.
