TikTok’s looking to underline its influence on the music industry, with the release of its second annual “Music Impact Report”.
And if you weren’t clear on the impact TikTok can have for musicians, the report spells it out in pretty definitive terms.
Based on research conducted by Luminate, TikTok’s Music Impact Report aims to highlight how the platform is helping musicians to gain exposure, leading to expanded impact on the broader industry.
As explained by TikTok:
“The Music Impact Report – which analyzes data from 2024 – considers the impact that TikTok and its users have on the music industry and artists in terms of music discovery, consumption, chart success, and contribution to industry revenues.”
The report includes a range of notes on the role that TikTok now plays in the broader recording industry.
The report is separated into fan and artist impact, with TikTok sharing a range of notes on how the platform is now helping users discover new music.
Among the key points:
U.S. TikTok users are 74% more likely to discover and share new music on social and short-form video platforms than the average short-form video user
U.S. music listeners who use TikTok are 68% more likely to use a paid-for music streaming subscription than the U.S. general population
U.S. music super fans on TikTok spend more money on music than even the average U.S. music super fan
Given the ongoing discussion of TikTok’s potential removal from the U.S., you can bet that a lot of music industry folk are pouring over these figures.
The report also includes a range of stats related to direct industry impact, including:
TikTok total views are significantly related to streaming volumes for 96% of artists analyzed.
84% of all songs that entered the Billboard Global 200 this year ‘went viral’ (i.e. had a period of high engagement) on TikTok beforehand.
The report also includes profiles of artists that have gained significant traction in the app, with overviews of TikTok’s impact on their career.
There’s even breakdowns of significant moments in their rise, and how that’s correlated with their TikTok success.
It’s a pretty compelling report, which will no doubt be of interest to all music industry folk, while it also underlines TikTok’s broader cultural impact.
And again, with a TikTok ban still possible in the U.S., you can bet that these figures stand out even more, as musicians contemplate promotions without the app.
