Virgin’s $45/60GB plan now matches a similar option from Fido

Virgin Plus has changed its plans yet again, this time rolling out a new option to more directly compete with Fido.
The move comes after several wireless providers — Virgin included — ended Lunar New Year deals on February 7th. Bell-owned Virgin scrapped the 8GB bonus data it offered on two plans. Now, just a few days later, Virgin has scrapped one of its two plans and increased the data on the other.
Virgin removed the $55/75GB 4G plan it offered and increased the $45/mo plan from 50GB to 60GB. This is 2GB more data than what customers could get during the Lunar New Year deal. It also matches Fido’s current $45/60GB plan, which includes 10GB of bonus data for 24 months. It remains to be seen if Virgin will match Fido’s $55/80GB plan too.
Notably, Fido previously removed its Lunar New Year bonus data deals, then quickly brought back the bonus data but without the Lunar New Year branding.
Virgin’s $45/60GB plan is arguably better than Fido’s. For one, Virgin doesn’t do autopay discounts, which means the plan actually costs $45/mo — Fido’s plan is $55 but drops to $45 for customers who do automatic payments. Further, Virgin’s plan includes 60GB of data, unlike Fido, which offers 50GB as part of the plan and then 10GB of bonus data that expires after 24 months.
Beyond that, the plans are nearly identical, with both offering 4G data and speeds capped at up to 150Mbps, unlimited Canada-wide calling and international texting, and standard features like call display, voicemail and more. Koodo, notably, didn’t have a matching offer at the time of writing.
While it’s nice to see Virgin bump up the data on a plan, it’s worth noting that the $45/60GB offer still isn’t that great of a deal. At least, it’s tough to get excited about while Freedom Mobile and Public Mobile continue to offer $39/60GB 5G plans with Canada/U.S./Mexico usage.
