Reading and vocabulary development are essential components of literacy, yet many primary school pupils in Ibadan and Lagos State struggle with these foundational skills. Despite various efforts to improve literacy, low reading fluency, poor word recognition, and limited vocabulary acquisition remain prevalent among young learners. Traditional teaching methods, which often emphasize rote memorization and whole-word recognition, do not effectively equip pupils with the phonemic awareness and decoding skills needed for reading proficiency. As a result, many pupils experience reading difficulties, reduced comprehension, and overall poor academic performance.

Early literacy is vital to the overall development of children. It begins in the first three years of a child’s life and supports their future language development in reading, writing, and overall learning. This is done through literacy skill acquisition which is vital to the understanding of text, and grasping of written information. It also involves decoding complex texts and understanding sentences (Aina et.al.,2024).

Reading is a fundamental skill that influences a child’s academic performance and lifelong learning. Reading and vocabulary development are central components of literacy that significantly influence a child’s educational journey and overall academic performance. As foundational literacy skills, they form the basis for effective communication, comprehension, and learning across all subject areas (Ehri, 2020). In the context of early education, particularly in developing countries like Nigeria, fostering strong reading habits and vocabulary knowledge is essential for equipping learners with the tools they need to succeed academically and socially.

Reading is more than just decoding letters, it is a multifaceted cognitive process that involves interpreting written symbols to derive meaning. According to Snow (2019), reading includes several sub-skills such as word recognition, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Each of these components plays a vital role in helping readers construct meaning from texts. Among early learners, reading instruction is most effective when these components are explicitly taught through structured approaches.
