Whannell: No Plans For “Invisible Man” Sequel

Universal Pictures
Filmmaker Leigh Whannell is currently in cinemas with the “Wolf Man” movie, his second go at a reinvention of a classic Universal monster.

Whannell’s first reinvention, “The Invisible Man” in 2020, was a success. It transformed the classic story into a domestic abuse thriller with sci-fi overtones. The film garnered rave reviews and performed strongly at the box office.

However, the possibility of a sequel exists if they want to pursue it. Speaking with THR to promote Wolf Man, Whannell says any possibility of a sequel is pretty much over, as he values the first film having a definitive ending:

“An ending is the hardest thing to do in screenwriting. It’s the holy grail of screenwriting, and I revere movies with great endings. I love that note that the film ended on; I can’t imagine gluing more story onto that. Sequels are mostly driven by the economics of Hollywood. ‘We scored, we did well, and let’s do it again. Let’s get them back there.’ And I’ve been a front-row viewer of that [ie. Saw and Insidious].

I was so happy with Invisible Man’s ending that I just do not feel the artistic need to go forward with it. The financial need is something different. The studio might look at that and say, ‘Well, we feel like it should keep going because we want to make more money.’ But on an artistic level, I’m like, ‘That’s a nice closed door there. Let’s just leave it closed.’”

As for Whannell’s next potential project after “Wolf Man,” the future is uncertain. His film was recently released in cinemas and has sparked a range of reviews. “Wolf Man” is also on track for a $12 million domestic debut.
