There is one huge mystery looming around One Piece‘s most powerful character, Whitebeard Newgate, and that is the scar on his face. What makes fans even more curious is the identity of the man powerful enough to scar Whitebeard. Whitebeard’s demise during the Marineford arc shook the entire community and also emphasized his centrality in the series, as he gave the whole series momentum with his reveal of the existence of the One Piece.
In this article, we’ll cover everything you need to know about Whitebeard and his scar. We’ll also reveal the most popular theory on the identity of the person who inflicted the wound on Whitebeard. We may go into some spoilers from the manga, so do proceed with caution if you aren’t caught up with the series.
1. Where Is Whitebeard’s Scar? Who Gave It To Him?
Whitebeard proudly flaunts his chest, which has a massive scar in the center. Whitebeard’s scar was never really spoken of until chapter 434 of the manga when Shanks went to visit Whitebeard. His visit was only to ask Whitebeard to have Ace to stop trying to kill Blackbeard. However, during their meeting, Whitebeard mentioned the fact that Shanks’ face reminded him of the person who gave him his scar.

This directly points toward the fact that the person who gave Whitebeard his scar was someone who bore a resemblance to Shanks, which would either be his brother, Shamrock, or their father, Figarland Garling. Since Whitebeard carried his scar for quite a while, it couldn’t have been Shamrock who gave him the wound, as both he and Shanks were too young to have fought Whitebeard. This means that it was likely Garling who gave Whitebeard the scar.
2. Roger Did Not Scar Whitebeard
When Whitebeard told Shanks that he reminded him of the person who gave him the scar, most fans assumed that Whitebeard was referring to Roger, as Shanks was Roger’s greatest subordinate and successor. This is certainly a misconception, as Roger couldn’t have given him the scar, and the reason for this is pretty clear.

Roger was a pirate who held the title of the Pirate King and was definitely capable of inflicting a scar on Whitebeard; however, most sightings of Whitebeard after his battles with Roger didn’t reveal him to have any visible scars on his chest. The fight they had at God Valley 38 years ago did not reveal any wounds in the aftermath, and there were no known fights between them, so it is safe to assume that Roger did not give Whitebeard the scar.
3. Why Would Garling Attack Whitebeard?
Figarland Garling serves as one of the major antagonists of the series. He is one of the five elders that head the World Government and holds the title of the Warrior God of Science and Defense.

The discovery of a Poneglyph at Fishman Island 25 years before Whitebeard’s demise was probably the reason for the interaction between Whitebeard and Garling. Fishman Island was Whitebeard’s territory, and knowing the world government, they had probably sent Garling to retrieve the Poneglyph before any of its secrets could’ve been leaked. Whitebeard’s scar could’ve been due to his clash with Garling at this point. Since Garling served as the supreme commander of the God’s Knights, he was probably powerful enough to wound Whitebeard, so this theory makes sense.
