Wicked director Jon M. Chu teased what is in store for Ariana Grande’s Glinda…

Ariana Grande Explains Why She’s Keeping Glinda’s Voice After ‘Wicked’

Jon M. Chu has some proper ploys in store for Wicked: For Good.

Indeed, the director recently shared what fans of the first film, which premiered in November, can expect for Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba and Ariana Grande’s Glinda in the upcoming 2026 installment (which has already been filmed).

“If movie one is about choices,” Jon teased to E! News in an exclusive interview, “movie two is about consequences.”

That is, fans won’t have to imagine how Ariana’s Glinda and Cynthia’s Elphaba are truly happy (or not) in the next installment. As for Cynthia’s recent admission that she penned a song for her character for the sequel? Jon remained tight-lipped on the subject, only emphasizing that Glinda and Cynthia’s relationship will be at the forefront of the film.

“There may be a couple new songs,” he continued. “I’ll neither confirm nor deny those reports. And now that people are really invested in this relationship, I’m really excited for them to see how this relationship unfolds.” (For more about what’s in store for your favorite Wicked characters and from Jon, tune in to E! News Jan. 7 at 11 p.m.)

Of course, devoted fans of the Broadway show will be familiar with what Jon is alluding to, as he continued, “How difficult, how messy the nuances become when two characters must find their way, and yet their destinations are so different from each other, and how heartbreaking and courageous that can be for both as they develop.”

Heading into the Golden Globes—where the film scored four nominations, including two acting nods for Cynthia and Ariana—the Crazy Rich Asians director also couldn’t help but gush over fans’ reactions to Wicked.

Giles Keyte/Universal Pictures

“My favorite part about watching people receive this movie has been how they’ve been taking it and being creative on top of it,” he effused. “Whether that’s dressing up and going to movie theaters or creating their own choreography, or using and learning the choreography that we have in the movie. Creating new lyrics, taking little bits and pieces that I love from the movie that they’re discovering on their own.”

And Jon isn’t the only member of the Wicked team to hold space for its fans. In fact, Cynthia encouraged fans to sing along while seeing the film in theaters.

“I’m OK with it,” she told Today in November when asked about the controversial singalongs. “We’ve spent this long singing it ourselves, it’s time for everyone else to join in. It’s wonderful.”

But with her third Golden Globes nomination under her belt for her Elphaba performance, Cynthia isn’t completely done defying gravity.

“Now that my feet are hovering off the ground, I cannot even come close to properly expressing what this moment means to me,” she wrote shortly after her nomination was announced. “Not just because of this individual nomination, but because I get to watch as this project and my @wickedmovie family are celebrated, too.”

To celebrate for yourself, you can watch Wicked from the comfort of your home via Fandango At Home, as it was released to digital platforms Dec. 31, or purchase it for yourself on 4K UHD, Blu-ray or DVD on Feb. 4 to watch again and again. And keep reading for Ariana and more star’s reactions to their Golden Globes nods leading up to the ceremony tonight, Jan. 5.

On his A Complete Unkown nomination, he shared, “What a tremendous honor to be included in this very talented group of actors this morning. A COMPLETE UNKNOWN was a 5 year labor of love for me, so it is very moving to receive this distinction. While on the surface 1960s Greenwich Village would look to have little in common with Arrakis, it was the open mindedness and groundbreaking culture of the 1960s in America that has ultimately given birth to these projects some 60 years later. THANK YOU.”
