John Cena dancing in a shiny chrome toilet bowl helmet while arguing with a bald eagle… yeah, that’s Peacemaker. James Gunn’s DC spin-off took a character most fans barely knew (and definitely didn’t care about after The Suicide Squad) and somehow turned him into one of the funniest, most oddly loveable superheroes on TV.
With the first episode of Peacemaker Season 2 hitting HBO Max today, let’s revisit the top 5 insane moments from Season 1 that made us laugh, cringe, and very, VERY occasionally shed a tear.
1. The Greatest Opening Credits in TV History
No skips. Ever. The full cast doing a dead-serious choreographed dance to Wig Wam’s “Do Ya Wanna Taste It” is nothing short of art.
Watching John Cena robot-dance next to a very confused Vigilante is the kind of chaotic energy that tells you exactly what show you’re about to watch. It’s silly, it’s awkward, it’s perfect, and will be stuck in our heads years later.
2. Peacemaker Goes off on Batman
Only James Gunn could give us a superhero rant this unhinged. In Episode 4, Peacemaker absolutely loses it on a neighbor who compares him to Batman, with Cena delivering one of the funniest monologues in comic book TV history. His argument? Batman’s entire “no kill” rule is BS because it just keeps the villains alive to hurt more people. This scene it’s part fanboy debate, part therapy session, and 100% Peacemaker energy.
He later on also insults Green Arrow’s… um… personal life. It’s peak Cena/Gunn comedy: over-the-top, awkward, and delivered with such conviction you almost believe him…until you don’t.
3. Vigilante in Jail
Who knew Freddie Stroma’s Vigilante would become the breakout star? His creepy, high-pitched monologues, his overly cheerful attitude about murder, and of course, his “casual torture” sing-song in the warehouse made him both hilarious and terrifying, and let’s not forget the Jail scene with him and Pacemaker’s “evil” dad.
Seriously, this is a guy who can cut off toes while humming a tune and then ask if you want to grab pizza is either your worst nightmare or your best drinking buddy.
4. Eagly, the True MVP
Forget the Justice League, the real hero of the DCEU is Eagly (Sorry Krypto), the CGI bald eagle who gives full-on hugs. Whether he’s dropping dead possums as “gifts,” attacking Peacemaker’s enemies, or just looking majestic while being utterly ridiculous, Eagly is America personified. That scene where he hugs Cena? Pure, unfiltered serotonin. If Season 2 doesn’t give us more Eagly, we riot!
5. The Justice League Cameo (Yes, That One)
The finale gave us the ultimate troll moment: the Justice League finally show up… late. Aquaman and The Flash (Jason Momoa & Ezra Miller in actual cameos) arrive only to get roasted by Peacemaker about Aquaman’s alleged relationship with fish. It’s crass, it’s shocking, it’s pure James Gunn‘s raw comedy style and it proved this show wasn’t afraid to poke fun at the entire DCEU.
Peacemaker Season 1 was everything comic fans didn’t know they wanted: equal parts absurd comedy, deep-cut DC lore, gory action, surprisingly heartfelt character arcs and cursing…a lot of cursing. Who knew a WWE superstar like John Cena could make us laugh until our stomachs hurt and then break our hearts a scene later? He has definitely found his perfect character, and we cannot wait to see what will come next.
