At the MWC 2025 conference, Xiaomi showcased a concept product – a magnetic detachable lens named ‘Xiaomi Modular Optical System’.
The Xiaomi Modular Optical System consists of a modified version of the Xiaomi 15 and a detachable 35mm lens. The lens is powered by small spring contacts and uses Xiaomi‘s proprietary LaserLink technology for data transmission, allowing users to experience no difference from using a regular built-in camera when taking photos in camera applications.
Xiaomi showcased a 35mm f/1.4 lens this time, equipped with a 1 billion pixel Light Fusion X Type 4/3 sensor. The lens has a variable aperture and performs well in low-light environments.
Its installation method is similar to MagSafe magnetic accessories, simply attach it lightly to the back of the phone, then click on the icon in the camera app to switch to detachable lens mode. Photos will be directly saved into the album and support shooting in RAW format. The lens has a built-in autofocus motor that allows focusing by tapping on the screen, and also comes with a physical focus ring for manual fine-tuning.
When shooting in Pro mode, the response speed of the lens is no different from the built-in camera. When attempting to focus on subjects at different distances, photos can present a natural blurring effect – something that typically required portrait mode in the past. However, portrait mode relies on algorithm recognition of object edges and can easily make mistakes when processing details like hair and glasses.
The key to this system lies in Xiaomi‘s LaserLink technology: a proprietary optical communication module where both the phone and lens have a small light spot on their backsides. Data is transmitted via near-infrared laser at speeds up to 10Gbps. This high-speed connection not only ensures a smooth shooting experience but also collaborates with Xiaomi‘s AI computational photography system to optimize image quality, something traditional external lenses struggle to achieve.
The lens is powered by the two contacts on the back of the phone. Xiaomi claims that its power consumption is equivalent to that of a built-in camera. The compact size of the lens makes it easy to carry, and its plug-and-play design enhances usability. This system may provide photography enthusiasts with a variety of professional lens options, but carrying additional lenses weakens to some extent the advantage of being able to take photos easily with a smartphone.
LaserLink technology can be used not only for photography but also potentially expanded to more magnetic accessories such as chargers, power banks, and game controllers. In the future, it is expected to help users seamlessly connect smart devices within Xiaomi‘s ecosystem, such as speakers, smart home products, and even cars.
