Xpeng CEO Optimistic About Competing with Tesla’s FSD in China

He Xiaopeng, Chairman and CEO of Xpeng Motors, recently expressed confidence in the company’s position in China’s autonomous driving sector, asserting that Xpeng is firmly in the “first tier” of smart driving technology. However, he acknowledged the potential impact of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system entering the Chinese market, stating that it could drive advancements in high-level autonomous driving alongside a select group of domestic automakers.

He Xiaopeng emphasized that Xpeng‘s Level 3 (L3) autonomous driving capabilities would “far surpass” Tesla’s FSD V13, though he noted that Tesla might continue to iterate with future versions like V14 or V15. “I welcome the competition,” he said, “and my expectation is that Xpeng‘s L3 technology will significantly outperform FSD V13.”

The comments come amid ongoing speculation about Tesla’s efforts to enhance its FSD system for the Chinese market. On March 14, Tesla addressed rumors of a potential collaboration with Baidu to improve its FSD system, clarifying that there are currently no plans for such a partnership. The rumors had sparked significant interest in the industry, as many believed a collaboration between Tesla, a leader in autonomous driving technology, and Baidu, a powerhouse in artificial intelligence and big data, could accelerate the development of advanced autonomous driving systems in China.
