Since Chinese actress Zhanilia Zhao Liying (趙麗穎) divorced William Feng (馮紹峰) in 2021, her love life has been a topic of much public interest. Rumors surfaced yesterday that Liying was in a new relationship and her new boyfriend was shockingly revealed to be 42-year-old Taiwanese director Midi Z (趙德胤).
On April 28, Midi Z was seen entering Liying’s residential complex. He was even photographed holding hands with Liying’s young son while watching a light show at a park on their way from home. Their interaction was as close and affectionate as that between a father and son. The boy appeared very familiar and comfortable with Midi Z, suggesting this was not their first interaction. After bringing the boy home that evening, Midi Z returned alone to his hotel. However, he was spotted using a keycard multiple times to enter Liying’s residence the following day and again on May 1, fueling further speculation about the nature of their relationship.
Liying met the Taiwanese director on the set of The Unseen Sister . It was his first theatrical release in China and achieved an impressive box office result of 151 million Chinese yuan.
Ethnically Chinese and originally from Myanmar, Midi Z moved to Taiwan at the age of 16 for his studies. He was one of the few directors in the film industry who focuses on themes related to Myanmar. He has received multiple Golden Horse Award nominations for The Road to Mandalay and Nina Wu , and was named Taiwan’s Outstanding Filmmaker of the Year at the 53rd Golden Horse Awards for The Road to Mandalay. In 2011, he renounced his Myanmar citizenship and became a naturalized Taiwanese citizen.
